Little Mumma Mittens…

is progressing slowly and steadily. 👌

Though still underweight, she’s not leaking smelly diarrhoea anymore. 😬

Thank goodness!

Her poops are forming up, though she has quite a way to go yet before her digestive system is healed and functional.

I suspect this lass has had a bacterial imbalance in her gut microbiome for quite some time.

It really is remarkable that she has survived. ❤️‍🩹

She’s also slowly becoming more comfortable in her new surroundings.

And being patted by a strange new person. ðŸ˜

Her ears are still somewhat sensitive due to the mites that had infested them.

But with continued treatment, I expect that to be resolved soon.

Ren, such a lovable lad…

We transported this young dude from Northam to his south of the river foster home yesterday. 🚗💨

I don’t think he’s had much experience with car travel.

But it didn’t take him long to get the hang of it.

Ren was adorable meeting his new foster dad.

It was a beautiful moment. 😍

And a brand new beginning.

The first few days in care…

Are some of the hardest. ❤️‍🩹

There’s fleas, ear mites and intestinal worms to treat.

Plus scared little hearts and confused little minds.

😔

These babies also have varying degrees of a gastrointestinal bacterial infection.

Too much bad bacteria and not enough good bacteria in the gut is a recipe for diarrhoea.

Plenty of stinky, messy 💩💩💩

😬

Which can quickly lead to dehydration and malnutrition.

Thankfully they are turning the corner now and heading for the home stretch.

We’re seeing solid poops and less mess. 👍

➡️ Poop is like a health report.

It can tell us SO much about a cat’s intestinal and overall health!

One of the first things I examine in new fosters is their pees n poos. 😃

Signs of illness can often be seen in a cat’s appetite… and litter tray.

Which is the cue to contact your vet asap!

Cats can burn in the sun ‼️

White cats (and cats with white ears and noses) are at high risk of sunburn and skin cancer.

I’ve seen some truly horrid photos of cats with shriveled ears and swollen, scabby tumours due to living a life in the Australian outdoors. 😰

So when I saw this little stray lass heading for a life unprotected from the sun’s rays, I thought…

Nope. Not happening.

Mittens and her kittens… 💕

✨New rescue✨

Last weekend we headed to the suburbs for 3 stray kittens.

Their birth mumma had very sadly been hit by a car and passed weeks ago. 💔

But Mumma Mittens, who had lost her own kittens 😪, took the 3 little orphans under her wing and raised them.

Even though she herself was unwell with a gastrointestinal issue.

Luckily, they have a wonderfully dedicated caretaker who sort assistance, to get them off the streets and into homes.

Not an easy thing though when rescues are overflowing. 😬

So we decided to step up and make room in our lives.

For more cats. ðŸ˜

Trapping didn’t go quite as smoothly as we had hoped,

as one of our traps wasn’t working properly.

But in the end we managed to get all 3 kittens…

With the shy and elusive white kitten being the first! 🤍

We also trapped an older, unsterilised stray tomcat.

He’s underweight and scabby due to fleas and fighting.

But is doing well and already appreciating retirement from street life.

And Mittens?

She was befriended by her caretaker, who has opened her heart and home to her. 🙏

We are temporarily fostering Mittens while she recovers and puts on weight.

She’s a really lovely lass…

I’m so glad we have been able to be part of her

‘happily ever after’ story. 🌟

Mocha is getting neutered today!! 🎉

From a sickly stray to a cheeky kitten…

All in a couple of weeks! 🥂

At 1.2kg, he’s the largest of his seal point brothers.

And he’s the only one who was ready for vet work today (we learned that his ‘sisters’ are actually his brothers 😅… with undescended testes!) 🤷

Fostering kittens on the kitchen table.

Well it is the middle of kitten season lol.

And there’s no room anywhere else. 💁

On the plus side, my coffee breaks are entertaining. ☕

Sniffing and stink faces. 😆

The flehmen response is what a cat is doing when it’s making that funny ‘stink face’ after smelling a new odour.

By holding their mouth open, they allow more air to pass through to the vomeronasal organ (VNO) at the base of the nasal cavity.

There is an opening in the roof of the cat’s mouth (behind the front teeth) that is connected via a duct to the VNO.

Smells pass along the duct and are sensed in the NVO as a combination of both smell and taste. 😯

Although this is often used for sensing pheromones from other cats, it is also used when exploring new scents.

Like me.

I’m a new scent. 💁

And as the flehmen response is voluntary, it means that the kittens want to get to know me.

Which is perfect.

Because I want to get to know them as well. 🤗

Becoming little domestic cats 🎓

When faced with the task of socialising 6 feral older kittens all at once… I choose not to. ðŸ˜

Divide and conquer (with love). 💕

They tend to feed off each other’s fear when in a larger group.

Progress can be slow.

So I separated them into 3 groups of 2…

Pairing up the slightly more confident with the very shy and skittish.

They have impressed me.

They are really lovely cattens 👌 (kittens becoming cats).

And they are ready for the next stage…

Vet work.
