An update on Milo… ❤️‍🩹

He’s staying at the vet hospital overnight again.

We can’t thank Heartlands Veterinary Hospitals York enough for their exceptional standard of care! ✨👏

Milo’s mum spent the day sitting with him and encouraging him to fight for his life.

He’s still got a long recovery ahead…

But we’re taking it as a good sign!

* For those who don’t know, Milo accidentally got stuck in the footrest of an electric recliner chair.

Stuck good and proper! 😬

He was there for over 2 days before he was miraculously found.

Just in the nick of time! ⏰

🙏 Please inform everyone you meet that it’s very possible for kittens to get jammed in these types of chairs.

Electric or manual…

And you may not know they are there if they are unconscious or badly injured.

PSA – A warning about recliner chairs and kittens! 🚨

Little Milo has used up ANOTHER of his 9 lives this week. 😬

He was trapped in an electric recliner chair! 🫨

In the closed footrest.

Exactly how this happened is anyone’s guess.

Kittens are too adventurous for their own good at times.

Missing since Monday morning, his distraught adopter searched high and low for him.

Other people joined in the search also…

Inside, outside and under the house.

Lost cat protocols were followed, traps were set, a social media post was made, neighbours were informed, sheds were checked…

But WHERE in the world was Milo?? 😭

Turns out he was in the house all along.

In a spot that was so obscure that no-one even knew it existed.

Found on Wednesday morning, Milo was barely holding on to life. 🫣

He was rushed to Heartlands Veterinary Hospitals in York, where he has been receiving intensive treatment since yesterday.

Thankfully no bones were broken.

But there is concern for his long term recovery.

😮‍💨

A rear leg appears to have nerve damage and it’s yet to be seen if he will have any loss of eyesight or other neurological damage.

Please spare a thought and a prayer for Milo and his human.

They are going through an awfully rough time and need all the love and support they can get!

A tribute to Pilot and Basil 🧡

Not all trapping trips end in happily ever after.

Not all strays are trapped in time for them to enjoy the comforts of a home for long.

Meet the late Pilot and Basil. 😽

Two older ginger tomcats from Kulin.

Both trapped around the same time.

Both felt very feral to start with and then began to enjoy some gentle pats.

Basil especially became an absolute smooch! 🤗

And they both absolutely LOVED their food! 😻

It was the highlight of their day.

They put on weight, their coats became a little softer and they relaxed into the routine of foster care.

No doubt they were related.

Father and son perhaps? 🤷

Brothers maybe?

They most likely lived their whole lives on the outskirts of Kulin.

Their territories ranging from bushland to the streets of town.

Scavenging for food, hunting and fighting for survival, creating kittens by the dozens every year.

That was their life for over a decade.

They had only been in our care a little while before they both declined rapidly in health.

First Pilot. And today, Basil. 💔

That’s the way it goes sometimes unfortunately.

Savvy stray cats will only go in a trap when their health is declining and they are desperate for food.

From the symptoms observed and speed of decline, I’m personally guessing chronic kidney failure.

But we don’t really know for sure.

And there aren’t enough funds available for testing to be done on every elderly stray tomcat.

As it is, we pay about $220 for humane and gentle euthanasia of rescue cats.

No-one owns them.

But then, that just means that they are everyone’s responsibility…

Right?

So we trust our vets to make the right call in each individual situation.

And we are so grateful for the heavily discounted medical attention our foster cats receive. 🙏

We also trust the cats to let us know when the best way we can help them is with a peaceful passing.

Pilot and Basil have now both left us.

And I can’t help but feel their loss. 🥺

Friends for a short time but I’ll always remember them.

I made them healthy wet meals every day.

And helped Basil learn how to smooch as he was SO awkward at first lol.

He loved to rub against my legs.

Then he would look at me as if to say

“is this right?” 🤭

Pilot really showed his sweet side the day before he left us.

He would have been a gentle companion cat if circumstances had been different.

But instead, I gave him what I could.

I brushed his coat and kept him comfortable and listened as he told me that he had lived a long life and was tired now.

And ready to sleep.

Farewell boys. 👋

I’m sorry we didn’t meet you sooner.

But know that we respected and loved you, both as ferals and friendlies. 🧡🧡

And that we will keep trying to help your family, who are still out there in the bush.

Waiting for their own rescue stories to begin.

Her fees were higher than expected when she went in for her spay, due to having a rotten tooth removed.

We couldn’t very well leave it in her mouth 😬 so out it came.

But Spudy is doing SO well now!

She’s loving her post-vetwork life.

And getting loads of love in her home. 😻

Found under a rosebush years ago, she reminds us that strays come in all colours these days.

Pouch Patrol 🦘

It’s a common enough sight in the Wheatbelt.

A kangaroo that has had a run in with a vehicle.

🥺

Did you know though that there may be a Joey in the pouch waiting for rescue, even though it’s mumma has passed away?

We carry coloured tape and a pillow case in our car for this very reason.

The tape is to show other drivers that this roo has already been checked.

And the pillow case is to pop a live Joey in while we take it to a qualified wildlife carer.

Sadly, this little one that we found last weekend had already passed.

😔

We carefully took it out of the pouch in order to check for life and then respectfully placed it back with its mumma when we were certain it had passed.

If you are ever unsure, please contact your local qualified wildlife carer.

And if you are unable to check the pouch yourself, please notify the local community so that someone else can check. 🙏

We don’t know why this Joey had already passed.

It may have been trauma from the accident.

Or it may have been due to the heatwave, as the little body was boiling to the touch.

Either way, checking the pouch as soon as possible after an accident is vital! 🚨

Second trapping trip was a big bust! 😿

The black and white mumma kept her two remaining bush babies well away from the traps.

Working in the Wheatbelt definately has its disadvantages.

Especially in a heatwave.

It’s hot and it’s hard and worst of all…

Stray cats aren’t used to Uber Eats in the scrub! 😂

They’re used to hunting for their food in the bush.

But we can only trap where we have permission.

So if you see Kulin strays hanging out on your property…

And especially if they are eating your pet’s food…

PLEASE HELP US by getting in contact!

And letting us trap where the cats eat. 🍗

That’s one of the KEY ingredients to success.

Trapping Bush Babies 🤩

We had a *super* busy weekend, with back to back trapping trips over 3 days.

We’re talking over 1000km of travel as we have to return home regularly to care for our own fur-babies and fosters.

Why so much travel?

Because the colonies we help manage are around 250km from where we live.

😳

Crazy? 😂 Probably lol.

But way-out Wheatbelt towns don’t have as many options as Perth does.

So all hands are needed to try and keep the stray cat populations under control.

For both cat and native animal welfare.

At the moment, a colony in Kulin is exploding in numbers! 💥

It happens SO fast, as kittens as young as 16 weeks old can become pregnant.

😬

Thank you to the land owners who have given us permission to trap on their properties!

And the handful of Kulin residents who contribute in so many different ways. 👏

If you’d like to help with our fuel and running costs, we’d *really* appreciate it! ❣️

As mostly self funded foster carers, we pour extreme amounts of our own money and time into keeping Kulin ‘stray cat clean’.

And it’s actually an impossible task without assistance.

Impossible for us alone but very achievable with community support.

Thank you also to the generous foster carer who is now looking after these sweet bush babies!

They’ll be cared for, fed, parasite treated, vet checked, sterilised, microchipped, vaccinated (the whole kit and caboodle) … âœ

Then adopted into loving homes through the registered rescue,

We also spotted 2 more litter siblings with the mumma in the bush.

But unfortunately mumma kept those babies out of our traps. 😔

So they’re still out there now.

In the bush, during a heatwave. 🥵

Please place shallow water bowls in shady areas for stray and native animals! 💦
